We Can Work

 

What is We Can Work?

 

The We Can Work program (WCW) aims to provide eligible high school students with valuable work experience that builds important skills for the work environment. The California Department of Rehabilitation (DOR) funds WCW contracts that place students in a position of work. Work experience may include paid employment, summer work experience, and job shadowing. It is important to note that WCW contracts are meant as temporary positions aimed at helping students gain work experience, and is not meant to obtain permanent employment. 
Program Information and Eligibility

 

Work experience, will:
  • Comply with the Department of Labor rules and regulations.
  • Contracting school will be the employer of record for paid work experiences.
  • Students will be paid no less than minimum wage.
 
Students referred to and receiving services are to meet all of the requirements to be considered eligible. These requirements are:
  • Student is still attending high school.
  • Student is eligible for DOR services, or otherwise considered Potentially Eligible*.
  • Student participates in special education, is eligible for a 504 plan, or has a disability.
  • Student is not younger than 16 years, and is not older than 21 years. 
 
*Potential Eligibility is defined by the DOR as any student who:
  • Has a disability
  • Is between the ages of 16-21
  • Is participating in either a secondary or post secondary program
  • Has not yet applied for DOR Services
