District History/Facts

San Jacinto Unified School District traces its roots to 1868, when 24 local settlers petitioned to establish San Jacinto School District No. 3, making it one of the earliest public school districts in the San Jacinto Valley. The first school opened in 1869 in a one-room schoolhouse, and education quickly became an important part of the growing community. Under the leadership of educator Edward Hyatt, who later became California’s first elected Superintendent of Public Instruction, the district expanded its educational offerings, including the establishment of a high school program in the late 19th century. As San Jacinto grew from a small agricultural community into a city, the school district grew alongside it, adding new campuses and programs to serve generations of local families. Today, San Jacinto Unified School District serves students throughout the San Jacinto Valley and remains deeply connected to the community’s history, growth and future.
