TWO-WAY DUAL LANGUAGE 90:10 MODEL
The DLI program at Megan Cope Elementary is set up to serve as a bilingual education model with about 50% of the students native/heritage speakers of each language (e.g., Spanish and English). This type of DLI is called "two-way" as in Two-Way Dual Language or Two-Way Dual Language Immersion.
The method of instruction is the 90:10 model of Two-Way Immersion in which a majority of the school curriculum is taught in a second language. Students in kindergarten and first grades will receive 90% of their daily instruction in Spanish and 10% in English. Each year, students will receive more instruction in English as the percentage of Spanish instruction time begins to decrease. This means that in Second Grade it is 80:20, Third Grade is 70:30, Fourth Grade is 60:40 and from Fifth to Eighth grade, students will receive 50% of their daily instruction in Spanish and 50% in English.
The Two-Way Dual Language Immersion model succeeds by enrolling students with backgrounds in both languages and giving them the opportunity to help each other learn. Spanish speakers help non-Spanish speaking students learn Spanish while English speakers help other students learn English. Both groups learn all of their traditional subjects – literacy, math, science, social studies – in both languages, becoming fully functioning in both languages.
Modelo del Programa de DLI
El programa de DI en la Escuela Primaria Megan Cope está configurado para servir como un modelo de educación bilingüe, con la mitad de los estudiantes que hablan inglés y la otra mitad de los estudiantes cuyo idioma es el español. Este tipo de programa de DI se denomina como un Programa de Doble Inmersión o un Programa de Inmersión Dual.
El método de enseñanza que hemos elegido seguir es el Modelo de Doble Inmersión 90:10, en el cual al comienzo, la mayor parte del currículo escolar es presentado en el segundo idiomà que en nuestro caso es el español. Esto significa que los estudiantes de Kínder y Primer Grado recibirán el 90% de su instrucción diaria en español y el 10% en inglés. Cada año que sigue, los estudiantes recibirán 10% más instrucción en inglés. Esto significa que en Segundo Grado es 80:20, Tercer Grado es 70:30, Cuarto Grado es 60:40 y de Quinto a Octavo, los estudiantes recibirán el 50% de su instrucción en español y el 50% en inglés.
Este modelo de Doble Inmersión matricula a mitad de estudiantes que hablan inglés y la otra mitad que hablan español, y les da la oportunidad de ayudarse mutuamente a aprender. Los hispanohablantes ayudan a los estudiantes anglohablantes a aprender español y los anglohablantes ayudan a los hispanohablantes a aprender inglés. Ambos grupos aprenden todas sus materias- artes del lenguaje, matemáticas, ciencias, estudios sociales - en ambos idiomas, logrando ser bilingües y alfabetizados en los dos idiomas.
