The Golden State Seal Merit Diploma is a recognition for public high school students who have demonstrated their mastery of the high school curriculum in at least six subject areas: English language arts, mathematics, science, and U.S. history, with the remaining two subject areas selected by the student. This award honors students' academic skills.
State Seal of Civic Engagement Header

The State Seal of Civic Engagement is a recognition for public high school students who demonstrate excellence in civics education and participation, and an understanding of the United States Constitution, the California Constitution, and the democratic system of government. The award honors students' knowledge of and participation in civic engagement.
The State of California offers three prestigious diploma recognitions that highlight students’ accomplishments in language, academics, and civic engagement. High school graduates may earn the State Seal of Biliteracy for demonstrating proficiency in two or more languages, the Golden State Seal Merit Diploma for strong academic achievement across multiple subject areas, and the State Seal of Civic Engagement for exceptional commitment to civic learning and community involvement. These honors celebrate well-rounded student success and can be proudly affixed to a student’s diploma and transcript.
