Physical Education

Board Policy 6142.7 States that the  Board of Trustees recognizes the positive benefits of physical activity on student health, well-being, and academic achievement. The district shall provide all students the opportunity to be physically active on a regular basis through high-quality physical education instruction and may provide additional opportunities for physical activity throughout the school day. The district's physical education and activity programs shall support the district's coordinated student wellness program and encourage students' lifelong fitness.


PE Requirements:

Students in an elementary school model ( including K-8 elementary) are required to participate in 200 minutes of physical education each 10 days  of school.

Students in  middle school and high school are required to participate in 400 minutes of physical education each 10 days of school. 


Every eligible student who participates in traditional, non traditional, and elective physical education courses shall be administered the physical fitness test.

Graduation Requirements ( BP 6146.1)

SJUSD Students are required to complete 20 credits of physical education as part of their graduation requirements.  

Independent Study PE (ISPE)

Affords the student the opportunity to extend PE beyond the school campus and regular hours. It allows the student advanced study in activities not normally in the District’s physical education program.  Students must work one-on-one  with a certified coach and meet one of the following criteria:

  • Student is an exceptionally gifted  athlete who is competing at the regional, state and national competition levels within a year in an individual sport. No Team sports are permitted. 
  • Student wishes to take an advanced level PE program that the school is not offering.

Important Items to Note:

  • Application must be submitted for ISPE within the timeline. Late applications will not be accepted. 
  • ISPE receives Pass/Fail grades.
  • Students must meet the minimum physical education minutes (400 every 10 days) with the certified coach that has liability insurance. 
  • Student is responsible for keeping the time log of activity and obtain coach’s signatures. 
  • Goal setting must align with the grade level Physical Education Standards and developed by the Coach and student.  
  • Students in ISPE must participate in the Physical Fitness Test (PFT) Fitnessgram.
