In response to the proliferation of violence on school campuses that has recently captured the nation’s attention, the organizations presented the immediate and long-term activities as well as the overall safety plan.

“We have been sharing with parents our safe and effective alternative to students walking off campus as part of the National School Walkout Day on March 14,” shares SJUSD’s Superintendent Diane Perez.  “I have been meeting with students and listening—they are planning some great activities and promoting a respectful remembrance of the tragedy at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida,” notes Perez.

San Jacinto Unified has been working closely with local law enforcement for each and every threat that has emerged on social media targeting the San Jacinto Valley.  “The continued disruption to the education of our students and the increase in anxiety among students, staff and families as a result of these false threats and rumors requires SJUSD officials and supporting agencies to take concerted and collaborative action,” says Dr. Karen Kirschinger, SJUSD’s Director of Student & Community Support, who also serves as the school district’s liaison with law enforcement and support agencies.

One major aspect of the campaign is promoting the “If You See It, Say Something” refrain throughout the community and especially at each of the school sites.  SJUSD has re-launched its mobile application, Anonymous Alerts, for parents and students to report valid safety concerns for any school.

“We are thankful for our partnership with SJUSD,” says Lt. John Salisbury, of the San Jacinto Police Department.  “We thoroughly investigate all threats using our Kids with Guns protocol,” he continued, “and we especially appreciate the school district for working diligently with education and observation to help prevent any acts of violence with our community youth.”
