FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
|What is happening to the SJUSD Dual Language Immersion Program?||The SJUSD Dual Language Immersion Program currently housed on the Megan Cope Elementary campus will continue in this location through the 2018-2019 school year. The DI Program will transfer to its new location on the Hyatt Elementary School campus in the 2019-2020 school year. The Hyatt location will be renamed The Edward Hyatt World Language Academy.|
|Why is the transition of the DI Program from Megan Cope to Hyatt happening in 2019-2020 and not sooner?||
When making such a transition, there are several factors to consider. These factors include:
|Why can’t the DI Program remain at Megan Cope Elementary?||There are two reasons. First, it has always been the vision of the Superintendent and Board of Education to provide a facility that the DI Program could call its own. This vision will become a reality when the Edward Hyatt World Language Academy begins in the 2019-2020 school year. Second, with the housing growth in the Megan Cope attendance area, the school is simply running out of space for students who live in the Megan Cope attendance area. Transitioning the program to Hyatt will provide the necessary space needed as more students move into the school’s attendance area.|
|What school and program choices will the current Hyatt students have in the 2019-2020 school year.||
Hyatt Elementary School will become a school of choice in the 2019 - 2020 school year. The current Hyatt Elementary families will have the opportunity to choose any school within the district contingent upon available space and district approval.
|Can my child remain at Hyatt if they pass the entrance assessment and are approved to enroll in the Dual Language Immersion Program?||
Yes. Enrollment into the Dual Language Immersion Program is based on a passing score on the entrance assessment and a variety of additional criteria. Hyatt Elementary students who meet all of the criteria will be invited to enroll in the program.
|What if I am a Hyatt parent and I have a kindergarten student who would like to enroll in the Dual Language Immersion Program?||
First, your child must take the entrance assessment. The assessment will begin on February 1st, 2018 and will be done by appointment only. For the kindergarten students living within the Hyatt boundaries who are invited to enroll in the Dual Language Immersion Program, transportation from Hyatt Elementary to Megan Cope Elementary will be provided only for the 2018 - 2019 school year.
|Why is the transition of the Dual Language Immersion Program a good thing for the Hyatt Community?||The transition is a good thing for many reasons. First, Hyatt Elementary School has experienced a trend of decreasing enrollment over the last few years. This means that the school district was faced with possibly closing the school to reduce the fiscal impact on the district’s budget. Secondly, the Dual Language Immersion Program needs its own facility. Finally, the leadership of the San Jacinto Unified School District understands the positive impact and benefits that the Dual Language Program will bring to the student’s it serves.|
|What will happen to the existing Hyatt Elementary Teachers?||First, the teachers will have the opportunity to stay at Hyatt if they so choose and if they have the credentials necessary to teach in a Dual Language Immersion program. The existing teachers at Hyatt Elementary will be working closely with the Human Resources Department within the district. The HR department will assist the teachers in finding a school within the district for the teachers to continue serving our San Jacinto students.|
|Are there any plans to expand the Dual Language Immersion program beyond grades K-5?||The vision for the Hyatt Dual Immersion Program is to expand the program to a kindergarten through eighth-grade program. There are many factors to consider and much planning to be done to make this a reality.|
|Who will be the principal of the Edward Hyatt Dual Immersion Academy?||
The plan is to have the current Hyatt Elementary School Principal, Mrs. Luna, as the principal for the Edward Hyatt World Language Academy.
