Educating and Inspiring Excellence

July 2013

Welcome to San Jacinto Unified School District (SJUSD) where our mission is to educate and inspire all students to achieve academic excellence, personal growth and social responsibility through the implementation of our student-centered vision: Each and every student, Preschool - 12th grade, college and career ready.

As I enter my 10th year of service to SJUSD, I am proud to be part of the magic and synergy of SJUSD that has us on track to become the Disneyland of schools, where our 9,200 students and their families experience a Culture of Learning in a caring and safe school climate supported by an incredible Board of Trustees, an innovative and progressive leadership team, and a passionate, committed and competent teaching and support staff who believe all students can and will learn.

As we continue to cultivate a Culture of Learning, we are excited about the implementation of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), which has been adopted by 46 states. CCSS, which includes high levels of student engagement, rigorous content, connection to real world issues and integrated use of technology, specify what all students will learn at each grade level to be prepared for both college and career upon graduation from SJUSD. To prepare for implementation, our Kindergarten and 1st grade teachers were provided access to iPads (due to a generous donation from the Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians) and piloted CCSS in 2012-13 with excellent results. Additionally, SJUSD will implement CCSS in English Language Arts across all grade levels this year, which is one year in advance of the state-required implementation.

A few other 2012-13 highlights include:

  • 25% of our schools achieved 800 on the Academic Performance Index
  • SJUSD Co-Teacher of the Year, Lori Fox, 2nd grade De Anza Elementary teacher, became the first SJUSD teacher to be named Riverside County Teacher of the Year
  • San Jacinto High School Senior Hunter Berry wins FFA Sentinel State Officer and will represent 5,000+ California FFA members in the upcoming year
  • San Jacinto Leadership Academy 6th grader Shakson Isaac won the District’s Spelling Bee, placed 3rd in the Riverside County Spelling Bee and in the top seven at the California State Elementary Spelling Bee.
  • SJHS Boys’ Soccer Team named 2013 Division 3 CIF So Cal Regional Champions
  • 1st San Jacinto Run United 5K raised $6,000 for Central County United Way
  • Instituted “Growing a World Class Customer Service Organization”, i.e. Pickle Institute, for classified staff members
  • Our long-time Superintendent, Dr. Shari L. Fox, whose vision, passion and servant leadership helped our District soar to new heights, retired

Thank you for allowing me to share a few of the exciting things happening in our District. I invite you to peruse our website and visit one of our incredible schools, review our Strategic Plan, watch “Spotlight on San Jacinto”, learn about the San Jacinto Education Foundation or read about the extraordinary accomplishments of our students. If you are a parent, I urge you to read about the various instructional programs to meet your child’s learning needs and/or learn how you can volunteer. As we enter the 2013-14 school year, we look forward to continuing to create the Disneyland of schools where excellence is the norm, learning is fun and engaging, clear pathways for student success are developed and nurtured, passion is ignited and results are the norm; this is what makes San Jacinto Unified a great place to work and learn.
